What Is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy, or HBOT for short, is a type of oxygen therapy. Its purpose is to increase oxygen levels in the body, which can speed up the healing of wounds and reduce inflammation.

HBOT is an approved treatment for chronic wounds, severe injuries, carbon monoxide poisoning and many other ailments. In addition to being a medical treatment, it is also used as a wellness therapy to support health, recovery and well-being.

How Does HBOT Work?

The air you breathe is only about 21% oxygen. HBOT, in comparison, supplies air that is 100% oxygen. This is achieved with the help of a pressurized chamber called a hyperbaric chamber. The air pressure in this chamber is up to three times higher than normal, which helps your lungs and tissues absorb more oxygen. After an hour of treatment, the levels of oxygen in your tissues are 15 times higher than possible with normal breathing.

HBOT works by delivering oxygen-rich blood to tissues starved of oxygen. Many injuries and diseases cause impaired blood flow and inflammation, which can reduce the amount of available oxygen and become a breeding ground for bacteria. By increasing the concentration of available oxygen in these tissues, HBOT can help speed up healing and prevent infections.

Benefits of HBOT

Oxygen is essential for health and survival. Supplying more of this key element can give you countless health benefits, such as:

  • Less swelling and inflammation
  • Fewer infections
  • Waste and toxin removal
  • Quicker recovery
  • Better wound healing
  • Improved immunity
  • Greater energy levels
  • Improved sleep and cognitive functioning
  • Anti-aging

What Can HBOT Treat?

HBOT has been traditionally used to treat everything from severe burns and gangrene to decompression sickness and carbon monoxide poisoning. Increasingly, it is also being used in wellness centers for conditions such as:

  • Chronic pain
  • Migraines
  • Fatigue
  • Insomnia
  • Trouble focusing
  • Visible signs of aging
  • And much more

What Is the Difference Between HBOT and Ozone Therapy?

HBOT and ozone therapy both increase the levels of oxygen in the body to promote wound healing and enhance immunity. HBOT does this by delivering pure oxygen under increased air pressure. Ozone therapy, on the other hand, infuses the body with ozone to stimulate greater oxygen uptake. This can be done by applying an ozone solution to the skin, mixing it with blood, blowing it into the mucous-rich tissues and drinking an ozone-rich solution. Both therapies provide many of the same health benefits.

Who Is a Good Candidate for HBOT?

HBOT is a great option for anyone who wants to enhance their health, performance and well-being. This versatile treatment can suit a wide array of clients looking for a simple solution for common complaints, like chronic inflammation and pain, poor performance and slow recovery, insomnia, fatigue, etc.

Because HBOT is generally safe and side effects are uncommon, there are few contraindications. However, if you have uncontrolled hypertension or diabetes, congestive heart failure, a pacemaker or other active implant, a history of seizures, chronic sinusitis, claustrophobia or are pregnant, we may suggest an alternative treatment.

The HBOT Treatment

A treatment session is simple. You come to your scheduled appointment and lay and relax in the hyperbaric chamber for about an hour. After that, you are free to resume your day as usual.

The HBOT treatment does not require any preparation. However, to make your experience as pleasant as possible, we suggest the following:

  • Bringing your favorite form of entertainment (e.g., tablet, phone, music or a book)
  • Wearing cotton garments to avoid static electricity
  • Avoiding caffeine, carbonated beverages and alcohol before treatment
  • Avoiding food two hours before treatment

What Is the Downtime and Recovery Like?

There is no downtime with HBOT. Side effects are rare and mild, such as temporary lightheadedness and hunger. HBOT is a noninvasive and painless treatment that does not involve a recovery period.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

Typically, more than one session is needed to see improvement with HBOT. The exact number of sessions you will need depends on what condition you are trying to improve and your body’s reaction to treatment. Patients with difficult-to-treat conditions may require between 20 and 40 sessions, while those who simply want to give themselves a health boost may benefit from fewer than 10.

When Will I Notice the Results of the Treatment?

Studies on HBOT show that patients report clinical improvement one to three weeks after their last treatment session. While you may feel subjectively better after a single session thanks to increased levels of oxygen, it will take time for your body to react to treatment on a deeper level.

Can I Combine HBOT With Other Treatments?

Yes! In fact, HBOT is often paired with other noninvasive therapies to boost treatment outcomes. These may include stem cell treatments, light therapy and infrared saunas.
